The Long Haul
In a world of short attention spans, nothing captures headlines for very long.
How do the UCC and CHYS tie in together? When North Dakota's Garrison Dam was built, the Native American food gatherers, farmers and hunters lost their fertile lands to the "Big Water" and, in the process, also threatened their very culture. Soon poverty, alcoholism, broken homes, premature death and deep cultural conflict developed among the Native American people. Congregational Church members, concerned about the negative impact these changes were creating for youth on the reservation, sought to create a boarding home where teenagers could mature safely into adulthood. For 40 years, Charles Hall Youth Services has offered a safe respite to at-risk teenagers who have been court-ordered into foster care. Today, new program efforts include experiential learning, spiritual growth, tutoring and mentoring. Ties with UCC congregations across the state of North Dakota and beyond continue to strengthen through opportunities for prayer support, volunteerism, and financial support.
